The StepFather-Michael Harding(Penn Badgley) returns home from military school to find his mother Susan(Sela Ward), happily in love with a man known as David Harris. He seems like the perfect father and husband to everyone; except Michael, who suspects that he isn't quite the man he seems to be.

Along with his girlfriend Kelly(Amber Heard), his father Jay, and Susan's friends, they slowly start to piece together the mystery of the man who is set to become his stepfather, but they may be too late in getting to the truth. As people who realize the inadequacies of David's(Dylan Walsh) story start to mysteriously die or disappear systematically, Michael is convinced his soon-to-be stepfather is behind them. After finding his father's body in the basement, Michael sets out to save his family and girlfriend before they become David's latest victims.

In the end of their fight, David pulls Michael off the roof of their house and both are left unconscious. After being in a coma for a month Michael finds out from his girlfriend and his mom that David escaped when the police showed up. The scene switches to David working in a different area with a different name, where he ends up meeting another woman with children.

Carriers
A pandemic virus has already spread worldwide, killing almost everyone. Two brothers, Brian and Danny, along with Brian's girlfriend Bobby and Danny's friend Kate, are heading to a place called Turtle Beach where they believe they can wait for the viral pandemic to die out.

On their way there, they meet a man and his infected young daughter and end up taking them to a place where a serum for the pandemic has been developed. They discover that that the serum doesn't work, and Bobby is accidentally infected by the little girl, though she hides this from the others. They leave the man and his daughter behind.

After this, they stop at a golf course, and though Bobby tries to prevent it, Brian kisses her. The golf course is being used as a base by a small group of survivalists, who capture the group. They discover Bobby's infection. Kate stresses that they will end up dead if Bobby continues to travel with them and they end up leaving a weeping Bobby behind at a deserted gas station.

Brian later breaks down under the pressure of having to make all of the difficult decisions in order to keep everyone alive, and Danny discovers that his brother is also infected. At Kate's urging, he shoots Brian and burns the disease-ridden body. Afterward, Danny and Kate reach Turtle Beach and Danny realizes that, without his brother, the place that had seemed so special to them as kids is now empty. The film ends, leaving their fate uncertain.
